Discovering the Ancient Traboules of Lyon, Fran

France may be known for it's charming architecture, rich history, and decadent desserts, but have you ever heard of the ancient traboules?
What's a traboule you ask?
A web of secret passageways that take you around the city quickly and covertly. Traboules, meaning "to cross" in Latin, started appearing during the 4th century. No, that isn't a typo. Yes, I do mean the 4th century as in 301AD-400AD.
So, how to spend our last morning in Lyon was a no brainer.

Only after a spot of breakfast though.

With a sticky Palmier in one hand, and a strong espresso in the other we set off.
Which incidentally might be my favorite way to do so.

Map at the ready, we eagerly faced our self guided tour. At first we danced around the idea, unsure of what could be on the other side of these seemingly random doors...

Wind your way through the maze of secret passageways, tuck into ancient tunnels, and enjoy the mystery of where you'll end up on the other side.

We ducked through cobblestone pathways which steered us into charming openings washed in sandstone.

Shaded and secluded; these make for the perfect place to take solace from the strong French sun, and make out a bit.

We ventured on following our map, through crumbling tunnels, touching the cool stone walls and imaging what Lyon was like when these walls were first constructed.

Our adventure began fairly early so to miss the tour groups. You can pay a small fee to take a guided tour or mosey through the traboules on your own.

Rumor has it that there are over 400 total in all of Lyon. A recent city project made it it's mission to restore a handful, and reopen them for everyone to meander through.

Perhaps the most famous, and definitely my favorite. Just look at that cobalt door *swoon*. Still contemplating painting our front door that shade, thoughts?
We poked our heads around corners, marveling at the detail put into every bit of iron, archway, and doorway.

Not a bad surrounding to spend every day in.
Beautyosuaurs Lex-Alex Good-Lifestyle Blog-Travel-Lyon-France-AlexGoodTravels-Traboules-Farmers MarketAfter the traboules you practically land on the front steps of Cath├ędral Sant-Jean. A real beauty that dates back to the 6th century.
Perched right alongside the river, and the perfect place to grab a local white wine to cool you down,  and a bench to rest your weary feet.
